CONCEPT EXPLAINER

What is an ad hook? (with real examples)

An ad hook is the opening beat of an ad, the first line, image, or moment, whose only job is to stop the scroll and earn the next three seconds. It is the single highest-leverage part of a paid ad, because attention is decided in that first beat: if the opening does not land, nothing after it is ever seen.

Below are the most common hook styles running right now in our curated index of 23,203 analyzed public ads. For each one: what it is, why it tends to work on a human, how common it is in the index, and real ads that use it. These are observations from ads running in public, not a promise any one of them converts.

Why the opening seconds decide everything

A person scrolling a feed is not looking for your ad. They are moving fast, and every ad competes with their friends, the news, and the next post. The hook is the moment you either interrupt that motion or you do not. Everything downstream, the offer, the proof, the call to action, only matters if the hook first wins the right to be read. That is why experienced advertisers test hooks harder than anything else: a better hook lifts the whole ad, and no amount of polish later can rescue an opening that gets scrolled past.

There is no closed list of hook types. They are a way of describing how an ad opens, and most strong ads blend a couple of styles. What follows are the recurring patterns that show up most often across the real ads in our index, so you can recognize them, understand why they work, and choose one deliberately instead of by accident.

The direct benefit hook

16,147 of 23,203 analyzed ads · 70%

A direct-benefit hook leads with the outcome the reader wants, stated plainly, before anything else. It works because it answers the only question a scrolling stranger is asking, "what is in this for me," in the first beat. It rarely wins on cleverness; it wins on specificity. "Sleep through the night" beats "better sleep," because a concrete promise is easier to believe than a vague one.

The urgency hook

1,192 of 23,203 analyzed ads · 5%

An urgency hook puts a clock on the offer: a deadline, a low count, a season about to close. It works because a reason to act now overrides the human default, which is to defer. The honest version is a real constraint the reader can verify; the cheap version is a fake countdown, and audiences have learned to discount those. The skill is making the urgency true.

The story open hook

1,113 of 23,203 analyzed ads · 5%

A story hook drops you mid-scene, a small human moment, before it sells anything. It works because a narrative recruits attention that a claim cannot: the brain leans in to find out what happens next. The best ones open on a relatable detail ("it starts small, shorter walks, less excited to play") so the reader recognizes themselves before the product ever appears.

The contrarian hook

936 of 23,203 analyzed ads · 4%

A contrarian hook opens by challenging a belief the reader holds, "everything you have been told about X is wrong." It works because a pattern break stops the scroll: a claim that contradicts the expected forces the reader to resolve the tension. It is high-risk, high-reward. Done with a real insight it earns attention; done as empty provocation it burns trust fast.

The identity hook

933 of 23,203 analyzed ads · 4%

An identity hook speaks to who the reader is, or wants to be, before it speaks about the product. It works because people act to stay consistent with their self-image: "if you are the kind of person who..." invites the reader to prove it. The mechanism is belonging, so the tighter the identity is drawn, the harder it pulls the right person and repels the wrong one, which is the point.

The stat claim hook

814 of 23,203 analyzed ads · 4%

A stat-claim hook leads with a number, a percentage, a result, a hard figure. It works because a specific statistic reads as evidence, and evidence lowers the skepticism a stranger brings to an ad. Precision is the whole game: an oddly specific number ("73% fewer") feels measured and true where a round one ("most people") feels made up.

Ad hook FAQ

How many types of ad hooks are there?

There is no fixed number; hooks are a way of describing how an ad opens, not a closed list. In our curated index of 23,203 analyzed ads, a handful of styles account for most openings, and the 6 most common are broken down on this page. Most real ads combine a couple of these rather than using one in isolation.

What makes a good ad hook?

A good hook earns the next three seconds honestly. It is specific rather than vague, it speaks to a real feeling the target audience actually has, and it pays off whatever attention it borrows. The opening beat does not need to be clever; it needs to be true and relevant to the person scrolling. The fastest way to weaken a hook is to make a promise the rest of the ad cannot keep.

Do longer hooks work?

Length is not the lever; relevance is. A one-line direct-benefit hook and a three-sentence story open can both work, because what holds attention is whether the opening is about the reader. In the ads that run longest in our index, the pattern is not short-versus-long, it is specific-versus-generic. Match the length to how much setup the idea genuinely needs, and cut the rest.

What is the most common ad hook right now?

In our current index, the direct benefit hook is the most common opening style, used in 16,147 of 23,203 analyzed ads. Being the most common is a reason to be careful, not to copy: the more crowded a hook is, the more a distinct execution stands out against it.
